Grandpa’s hands

“Ew  I don’t wanna hold your hand Grandpa they’re yucky”.  Those words hurt  but they were true, my hands are kinda yucky.  We were in Redmond Town Center, going to see Santa Claus, it was the cold of  winter and  while my hands are never “pretty”, in winter time they are  really kinda  gnarly.  Dry and split, stained with grease, dirt and nicotine. Constantly bleeding or scabbed from  something  somewhere, my hands  always hurt somewhere.  I  don’t treat my hands very well. Never have and probably never will. Continue reading

Saint Paddy’s, “Poppa” and Engagement Day

Saint  Patrick’s  Day.  For  some it’s a  day of partyin’  and  drinking  for no  reason whatsoever. For  others  it’s a day  of  religious  celebration  for the  coming of  Christianity to  Ireland.  For   my  wife it  was  a  day  of  sadness. She lost her   grandfather, Edwin Eyer (“Poppa” to Christy)  on this   day in  1990. Continue reading

9/11/12 – The Rising – 343

Last year, 2011 on the 10 year  anniversary of the 9/11 attacks  my wife and I went to  a  ceremony  on the Tacoma Waterfront  where the  Gig Harbor  Fire Department  had on  display a piece of steel girder from the WTC in NYC.  As we were walking  along the beach to the  ceremony we were witness to a  fire boat in the harbor  shooting  water and ringing it’s bells to memorialize those lost on that day 10 years prior.  Continue reading

Do firefighters wear the same thing under their bunker gear as Scotsmen do under their kilts?

I’ve learned over the years that  Firefighters and Racecar drivers are a superstitious lot…  I’ve got a pair of “lucky socks”   that I wear on nearly every call..it would gross you out to know more about the socks so this story  isn’t about them…… it’s about my “lucky sweats” … In case you  don’t know that big bulky  gear that you see firefighters wearing  on calls is  called bunker gear or turnout gear… bunks  for short…. But this  story begins  long before I became a firefighter  12 years ago….  Continue reading

How Did you know EMS was your calling….?

So I saw a  “contest”  in an Emergency Medial  site that I follow  to  write your story about  when/how you knew  EMS was your calling…  that was an easy  one for me to answer so I thought I’d  go ahead and write a  short version of it  for that contest… I  I  sat down and wrote…. Well  problem… it had to be 500 words or less LOL  anyone who knows me,  knows that’s next to impossible…. Well, I did  submit a  500 word version, but I figured I’d share the  unedited version here for anyone that may be interested  as I’ve  had people mention that  they like my writing  (Probably just being nice) so I thought I’d share.. Me, The Boss and 9/11

I have a friend  that I work with ( @Scott Proctor) who did this  30 day music challenge thing  here on FB. For 30 Days there is a question that  you have to answer with a song that made you feel that way or  what you listened to when you were feeling a certain way etc… it was very interesting and the questions  made me  think  how  I would answer them… well depending on the weather, the time of day the curvature of the earth I thought on such and such a day I would choose  this song  but if the wind was from the  south east, I would choose this song.. so I didn’t do the  challenge because music was such a huge part of my life. My entire childhood was full of music, I won awards and  honors for musical stuff.. Continue reading
